How to choose your windows
Start with what you're replacing. Old single-pane or worn early-vinyl windows are where you'll feel the biggest jump in comfort and energy savings; failing seals (fog between the panes) and drafts are the clearest signals it's time. From there it's three decisions: material — budget-friendly, low-maintenance vinyl versus stronger, paint-holding fiberglass; style — easy-cleaning double-hung, tight-sealing casement, single-hung, or a bay/bow to open up a room; and glass package — for the Tennessee Valley, ENERGY STAR Low-E with argon fill is the one that pays you back on summer cooling bills.

What actually drives your window price
A quote you can evaluate breaks these out as line items. If a quote arrives as one number on one line, you cannot compare it to anything — ask for it itemized.

The performance numbers that apply in TN, GA & AL
Our entire service area sits in the ENERGY STAR South-Central climate zone. Under ENERGY STAR Version 7.0 a qualifying window here must hit a U-factor of 0.28 or lower and an SHGC of 0.23 or lower.
Of those two, SHGC is the one that matters most in this market. Cooling load dominates here, not heating. SHGC measures how much of the sun's heat comes through the glass — lower blocks more. On west- and south-facing elevations, that number does more for your comfort and your summer power bill than another fraction of a point of insulating value. We spec glass by elevation for exactly this reason; the same window does not belong on every side of a house.
Triple-pane is available if you want it, and we will quote it. We will not tell you it is necessary here — its returns are strongest in heating-dominated northern climates. In this zone the same money spent on a better coating, argon fill and a warm-edge spacer returns more.

It depends on what you're replacing. ENERGY STAR estimates that replacing old single-pane windows with certified windows saves around 12% on energy bills on average; moving from older double-pane to new Low-E, argon-filled glass saves less but still cuts the heat gain that's the number-one comfort complaint in our climate.
Both are good; it comes down to budget and priorities. Vinyl is the most cost-effective and virtually maintenance-free, and modern vinyl performs well. Fiberglass costs more but is stronger, holds paint, and expands and contracts less in temperature swings.
